Life-Space caught up with Giaan Rooney to see how her life has changed after her championship swimming days and as a young mother.

How do you stay in such great shape after years of rigorous training in the pool?

I certainly don’t do any rigorous training these days, in fact I struggled for a long time after I retired from the pool to find an exercise I found enjoyable & sustainable. I haven’t swum a lap in over 11 years, nor have I visited a gym, but I love going for long walks, and pilates. Pilates not only keeps my body aligned and toned but helps me with my (non existent) flexibility!

Have the years of physical exercise impacted your general health and wellbeing, inside or out?

Yes, but probably not in the way you would expect! I feel more energetic, happier & healthier than I ever did as an elite athlete, so when people say to me, ‘you must miss being fit’ I very quickly tell them that being that ‘elite fit’ actually has a lot of negatives…. I felt like my body was 85 every time I got out of bed due to aching muscles, my immune system was constantly suppressed, making it very susceptible to illness, I was constantly exhausted which made motivation hard & there was never any energy to do anything outside of training…. so I have no residual injuries or illness from my time in the pool, but life is much more enjoyable!

Why did you start taking probiotics?

When my Husband, Sam and I started thinking about trying to conceive, I started doing some research on what we could do to that may help  give our children a healthy start to life, I also read that skin sensitivities such as eczema can be deterred by supplementing with specific probiotics during pregnancy and the first two years after birth can actually help reduce the likelihood of the baby developing the condition. I read a lot about the importance of supporting gut health and good bacteria and the more I read, the more I became confident that probiotics could be a great addition to my pregnancy diet and supplement regime to help maintain general wellbeing.

Why did you choose Life-Space probiotics?

There was a number of reasons why I chose Life-Space Probiotics. Firstly, I love supporting Australian-made products, especially when it comes to health, as I trust the ingredients and the manufacturing process so much more due to our globally high standards. Secondly, I liked that Life-Space probiotics have such high numbers of beneficial bacteria and thirdly, considering I travel so regularly for work, I needed my probiotic to be portable, so the fact Life-Space doesn’t need to be kept in the fridge was a big tick for me.

What effects did you notice on your own general health and wellbeing?

My family has always suffered from gut problems and respiratory issues which I never knew were connected until I started my research. Within a few weeks of starting on Life-Space probiotics, I noticed less bloating and better digestion. Having such a positive experience made me want to give probiotics to my entire family (!) and I’m happy to say that they all now take them as part of their daily routine.

You have 2 beautiful children, did you take probiotics during your pregnancies?

Absolutely! I started taking probiotics as soon as we started trying to conceive and have been on them ever since, I just change which Life-Space probiotic product I am taking depending on my situation, so at the moment I am on the Probiotic for Pregnancy & Breastfeeding capsules until I finish feeding my second child, Alexa.

Do you give the probiotics to your children?

Again, absolutely! Zander started the Probiotic Powder for Baby formula at 6 months old after he was weaned, and has since moved up to the Probiotic Powder for Children formula. I’ll start Lexi on either the Probiotic Powder for Infant or Baby depending on when she stops breastfeeding.
